Swar Mandal

Swar Mandal

Just like the Tanpura, a Swar Mandal is a multi-stringed instrument which the vocalist plucks during the vocal performance. Each string in the Swar Mandal is tuned to a different Swar, according to the Raag the vocalist is going to sing. Strings are tuned in the descending sequence of the Raag. For example, if the vocalist is going to sing Yaman, then the Swar Mandal strings are tuned to Nishad, Dhaivat, Pancham, Teevra Madhyam, Gandhar, Rishabh and Shadaj in that  order. Strings are tuned to Swars in the upper, Madhya and lower Saptak. By plucking the strings continuously during the performance, the vocalist gets a strong support for all the Swars in the Raag.
