What are the different Taals used in a performance?

It is customary to start a Raag in a slow or Vilambit tempo. Typically vocalists use the Vilambit Ek Taal for the first composition. Vilambit Ek Taal has the same Bols used within Ek Tal but each beat in the 12 beat Ek Tal is expanded into 4 beats, resulting into a complete cycle of 48 beats.

After rendering the composition in Vilambit Ek Taal, the vocalist will typically switch to a second composition sung in a faster Taal such as Ek Tal or Teen Tal.

The Taals frequently used in classical vocal performances are Addha, Roopak, Jhap, Ek, Jhumra, Choutal and Ada Choutal and Teen Taal.

Dadra, Kaherwa, Bhajani or Bhajani Kaherwa, Deepchandi are commonly used for Bhajans and lighter variations of classical music.
